What to know before you approve a technology investment

Most technology proposals answer the wrong question. Here is what leaders should ask for.

Technology proposals often arrive as a single recommendation wrapped in technical language. Owners and leadership teams are left to approve or delay, with little sense of the alternatives or the risks.

Five things every proposal should show

A plain statement of the decision being asked for. Two or three real options, including doing nothing. Total cost of ownership over three to five years, not only the first-year price. The main risks and who owns them. And the checkpoints at which you will see whether it is working.

A good proposal makes it easy to say yes, and just as easy to see what you are saying yes to.

For any organization, this discipline matters: one poor technology decision can consume a year of budget.

Let’s talk about the decision in front of you.
